SAFETY TIPS FOR HOME OWNERS TO PREVENT EBIKE FIRES

The powerful lithium ion batteries used in electric bikes (e-Bikes) are responsible for a growing epidemic of fires. If you own an e-bike or looking to get one, how do you prevent potential fires from happening?

We highly recommend avoiding third-party or aftermarket battery brands for your bike. Because the battery is usually the most expensive part of the bike, so never buy a cheap battery that is not UL certified.

The powerful lithium ion batteries used in electric bikes are responsible for a number of these fires. As a result, there’s been a lot of buzz around electric bike fires lately caused by the battery, with some incidents being more severe than others.

As of March 2023 there have been about hundreds of fires and 3 deaths, according to the New York City fire department. Recently in 2022, an e-bike fire inside a Manhattan high-rise apartment became an inferno that injured nearly 40 people and forced firefighters to evacuate residents using ropes.

Ebikes are a great alternative to transportation and a game-changer in reducing fuel costs. If you have one, you know how much fun they are! Ebike battery fires happen for many reasons, including design flaws, improper care and use, manufacturing defects, and using a damaged or dropped battery. However, although accidents are unlikely, you should know best practices.

ELECTRIC BIKE SAFETY TIPS – BATTERY BEST PRACTICE to Prevent Fires

  • Only use the manufacturer’s battery and charger for your bike.
  • Following the manufacturer’s specifications and guidelines.
  • Always turn off your battery before charging.
  • Always charge the battery in a well-ventilated, cool room.
  • Do not leave the battery unattended for an extended period.
  • Do not attempt to charge a damaged or malfunctioning battery.
  • Recycle damaged batteries.
  • Set a timer so you don’t forget about it
  • Never leave your battery near a heat source such as direct sun or a heater.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand.
